On August 11, 2001, the City of Trier and Ludwigshafen bid to hold the second State Garden Show in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2004.
The Trier concept, providing for the inclusion of the entire region as an important component, persuaded the jury, and, on October 23, 2001, the State Council of Ministers accepted the bid of the Capital of the Moselle Region for the Garden Show.
Landscape architecture competition
In order to realize the project, the City of Trier announced a landscape architecture competition. From the limited public competition (eight architects’ offices were invited, an additional 22 were drawn by lots from the 104 entries), the city hoped to receive a variety of suggestions on design and integration of the open spaces in the development area “Petrisberg.” The winner of the landscape architecture competition was the team of Helmut Ernst and Michael R. Schwarz of Trier.
